Bang on a Can is an American contemporary classical music collective founded in 1987 by three composers: Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. Its mission is to create, present, and record new music. The organization began with a marathon concert in New York City and has since grown into a multifaceted entity that includes the annual Bang on a Can Marathon, the Bang on a Can All-Stars performance ensemble, and the Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA. The collective has been influential in promoting and performing new music across genres and has commissioned and premiered works by a diverse array of composers. Their recording projects have included genre-defying albums that often blend elements of classical, jazz, rock, and world music. The Bang on a Can All-Stars have been particularly noted for their dynamic performances and collaborations with other artists and ensembles.
