Following the culture of sound systems, the increasingly digitized beat was slowed down to suit the needs of dancers. Dancehall, however, was already evolving in the late 1970s, and in 1985 it conquered the reggae world with Wayne Smith's first computer-generated riddim, "Under Me Sleng Teng". The "Birth Of Dancehall" compilation sheds light on the time when groups like Soul Syndicate and Roots Radics began to slow down the beat and the first drum machines appeared. Producer Ossie Thomas was one of the grandmothers of dancehall. His label Black Solidarity released some of the earliest dancehall artists such as Triston Palmer, Robert French, Papa Levi, Puddy Roots and Earl B.
