Porcupine Tree was founded in 1987 by guitarist, singer and songwriter Steven Wilson. Porcupine Tree's fifth album, 1999, was mixed and mastered by Steven Wilson. Stupid Dream is Porcupine Tree's fifth studio album. Steven Wilson has stated that the album is about his personal "insecurities and feelings" and "the usual songwriting stuff", as he believes the lyrics are the most relevant and moving from a personal standpoint. "When I was writing some of the songs for the album, I was aware of the contradiction between being an artist, a musician, trying to be creative and write songs, and when you have the album done, the music done, the creative side done, you have to go out and sell and promote. And that's a very different experience. It's not a very creative process. It's quite a cynical process in a way when you have to sell your music. But you have to do it. I mean, if you want to survive as a modern musician, you have to "prostitute" yourself in a way to sell your music and your art. And I was very aware of this contradiction. If you think about it too much, you can go crazy. It's absurd. It made me think about what it was like when I was a teenager, when I was just starting out and interested in music. I think a lot of teenagers dream of becoming a pop star or a professional musician. This "silly dream" of being famous and that "life is a ball and everything is wonderful". But the reality is that being a professional musician is very hard. It can be very heartbreaking, there's a lot of disappointment behind it, a lot of hard work, a lot of travelling." (Steven Wilson) Stupid Dream is the fifth studio album by the British proggers, recorded when the band didn't have a label and signed to Snapper that same year. The album was mastered at Abbey Road studios.
