With the recording of Igor Stravinsky's anti-war musical theater piece "The Soldier's Tale," Waters continues his longtime musical exploration of the theme of war and the personal loss of his father in World War II and his grandfather in World War I. Waters has already explored this theme in Pink Floyd's famous albums "The Wall" and "The Final Cut". The album was released shortly before the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne, which ended World War I on November 11, 1918, and shortly after the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Stravinsky's Musical Theatre on September 28, 1918. The personal reference to Stravinsky's work is clearly evident in Waters' recording. For example, he gives the soldier a working-class southern English accent - Waters himself hails from Surrey in southern England - and contrasts it with the speaker's character, who speaks calmly and matter-of-factly in High German. The scenes in which the devil and the soldier have an argument are delivered by Waters with such energy and cold fury that one suddenly feels the drama of a small man taking too many risks at close quarters. With his Story of a Soldier (in the original L'histoire du soldat), Stravinsky wanted to shake up his audience. Roger Waters, along with musicians from the prestigious Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, brought the piece to life with commitment and determination.
