In 1974 Herbie Hancock came to the fore with the success of his single "Chameleon". The band, which at the time featured Mike Clark on drums, toured extensively throughout the United States, performing at festivals and large concert halls, playing to increasingly large and diverse audiences. The quintet quickly became a tight unit with stunning grooves invented by Paul Jackson and Mike Clark, who had already played together in Oakland and the Bay Area before joining Hancock. With this lineup, the band took off at warp speed, as evidenced by Robert Springett's cosmic picture on the cover of Thrust, recorded in San Francisco in the summer of 1974. The most striking example of the band's unique sound is "Actual Proof," a heavily reworked arrangement of a song Hancock originally wrote for the 1973 film The Spook Who Sat By The Door. The opening track "Palm Grease" is driven by Mike Clark's signature groove and Bill Summers' Latin-tinged drums. "Butterfly" is a lush ballad that showcases the mesmerizing work of horn player Bennie Maupin.
