A perfect Chopin moment: the legendary 1965 Martha Argerich album on vinyl "I peeked into the studio to make sure the flood of sound was really coming from a tiny girl sitting at the piano. It was incredible. ... She came into the control room, looked at me and beamed, knowing what a tremendous impression she had made." What happened in June 1965, described here by producer Suvi Raj Grubb, made recording history: young Martha Argerich, winner of the 1965 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, recorded her first recital as an EMI exclusive artist. It became one of the most famous classical music albums. Now, on the occasion of the pianist's 75th birthday, it is being released in a noble vinyl version. Chopin, of course, was on the programme. With this masterpiece of romantic piano music, the then 24-year-old Argentine pianist had already charmed the jury in Warsaw. The recital now sparkles with virtuosity and a wealth of facets: alongside the mazurka, nocturne, scherzo and Polonaise in A flat major, the third piano sonata stands out like a rock in the programme, showing why Martha Argerich's playing has been hailed around the world as a 'natural event' full of 'elemental power' and why this in fact rather timid pianist has even been apostrophised as a 'lioness at the piano'. The legend of the album includes the fact that the release of this elemental force of piano artistry was initially prevented by contractual clauses. It is only since 1999 that one can understand the enthusiasm that left producers and insiders speechless during the three-day recording session in the studio.
