Black Celebration is Depeche Mode's fifth studio album and is considered one of the band's darkest and most atmospheric works. All eleven songs were written by Martin Gore, with four songs - A Question of Lust, Sometimes, It Doesn't Matter and World Full of Nothing - sung by himself. The album title "Black Celebration" was a false lead for Depeche Mode. Despite their dark nature, the songs on the record are neither about occult acts nor black masses. Instead, Martin Gore writes about feelings and the darker side of life, which includes a large portion of boredom. At the end of a black day, we can still celebrate that it's finally over. In his homeland, "Black Celebration" reached number three in the UK charts. In Germany, the album climbed to number two, and in Switzerland it even reached number one.
