Wheels of Fire is an album by British rock band Cream , released in 1968. It is a double album that was recorded live during the band's 1968 farewell tour. The album was released in both stereo and quadraphonic formats. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one in the United States and the United Kingdom. It was certified triple platinum by the RIAA. Wheels of Fire features live versions of many of Cream's best-known songs , including "Sunshine of Your Love", "White Room" and "Crossroads". The album also includes a number of blues cover versions, such as "Spoonful" and "I'm So Glad". Cream was a very influential rock band and Wheels of Fire is often considered one of their best albums. The album was critically praised upon its release and is now considered a classic rock album.

Four months before the Beatles submitted their nomination for the best double album of 1968, Cream submitted their nomination. Wheels Of Fire, a record that featured the classic track "White Room" and other great performances by the rock trio, appeared in British record stores on August 9, 1968 and became a real curiosity. But in terms of sales, Cream was on a roll. In the first example of what we now call a multi-format release, Polydor issued both a single disc of In The Studio, which contained the tracks "White Room" and "Sitting On Top Of The World", "Politician" and "Born Under A Bad Sign", and a double disc containing this set and a disc of Live At The Fillmore, recorded at three different concerts at this venue in 1968. Alongside a cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Sitting On Top Of The World", Cream paid tribute with bluesy versions of "Spoonful", another Wolf cover but written by Willie Dixon, and of course Robert Johnson's epic "Crossroads". Billboard chart and four weeks later, on August 10, it reached the top of the US charts, knocking Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass' The Beat of the Brass off the top spot and starting a four-week streak at number one. In the UK, not one but two Cream albums appeared on the chart on 17 August. The single album climbed to No. 7 in its second week, while the double album eventually reached No. 3.
