It combines lush, subtly layered music, but the best thing about this record is that it feels casual and relaxed. In fact, it takes a few listens to see just how versatile Withers is on "Still Bill". He can make complex funk rhythms sound simple and effortless - like on the album's most famous song, the gospel anthem "Lean On Me." That's what's fantastic about Withers' music: it's warm and catchy, yet has a depth and complexity that reveals itself every time. Then there's the sheer quality of the songwriting, which is as confident in the groovy "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" as it is suspicious and paranoid in "Who Is He (And What Is He To You?)", while "Use Me" is happy to exploit its object of desire. The high quality of the songs is consistent throughout the record, making "Still Bill" perhaps Bill Withers' best record ever.
