The Smithereens are an American rock band formed in Carteret, New Jersey, in 1980. The group is known for their blend of catchy 1960s-inspired power pop and the intensity of punk rock. The original lineup consisted of Pat DiNizio (vocals and guitar), Jim Babjak (guitar and vocals), Mike Mesaros (bass guitar and vocals), and Dennis Diken (drums and percussion). They gained popularity with their 1986 album "Especially for You," which featured the hit song "Blood and Roses." Throughout their career, The Smithereens released several albums that showcased their ability to craft melodic hooks and driving guitar riffs. Their music has been characterized by its classic rock influence, tight songwriting, and DiNizio's distinctive baritone voice. The band continued to perform and record music into the 21st century, maintaining a loyal fan base. Pat DiNizio passed away in December 2017, but the remaining members have continued to keep The Smithereens' legacy alive by performing with guest vocalists.
