"Philly" Joe Jones

"Philly" Joe Jones was a prominent American jazz drummer, renowned for his work during the bebop and hard bop eras of jazz. Born Joseph Rudolph Jones on July 15, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he earned the nickname "Philly" to distinguish him from the older jazz drummer Jo Jones. His career took off in the 1950s when he became a central figure in the New York jazz scene. Philly Joe Jones is perhaps best known for his association with the legendary trumpeter Miles Davis and was a key member of Davis's First Great Quintet. During his tenure with Davis, he contributed to several landmark albums including "Workin'," "Relaxin'," "Steamin'," and "Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet."
