Natalie Merchant is an American singer-songwriter and musician who began her music career as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981. She was with the band until her departure in 1993 to pursue a solo career. Her debut solo album, "Tigerlily," released in 1995, was a commercial success and received critical acclaim, featuring hits like "Carnival," "Wonder," and "Jealousy." Merchant's work is known for its literary and socially conscious lyrics, as well as its incorporation of folk and pop influences.
