Influential Jazz Saxophonist and Bandleader

Lester Young, often referred to as "Pres" or "The President," was a prominent American jazz tenor saxophonist and a leading figure in the swing era. Born on August 27, 1909, in Woodville, Mississippi, Young grew up in a musical family and began his career playing in various bands and orchestras. He gained fame as a member of the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1930s, where his smooth and relaxed playing style contrasted sharply with the more robust approach of his contemporary Coleman Hawkins.
