J Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey on February 7, 1974, was a highly influential American record producer and rapper. He emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene in Detroit, Michigan, and became known for his unique production style that often featured a rich mix of soulful, jazzy samples and live instrumentation. J Dilla was a member of the group Slum Village and contributed to the work of many artists including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Erykah Badu.
