Shirley Verrett (May 31, 1931 – November 5, 2010) was an American operatic mezzo-soprano who successfully transitioned into soprano roles, a feat that is quite rare among opera singers. Her voice was known for its power, range, and versatility, allowing her to tackle a wide variety of repertoire from Baroque to contemporary works. Throughout her illustrious career, Verrett performed at the world's leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, and the Royal Opera House in London.
