In 1963, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd founded Studio One on Brentford Road in west Kingston. With his downbeat sound system, he was already a real star in Jamaica. But with the establishment of his recording studio and label, Dodd made world music history. Since the studio was technically superb by Jamaican standards, and Dodd not only had musical talent and creative thinking, but also a strong business acumen, it was only logical that all the island's reggae artists came to him, including Bob Marley, The Skatalites, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, The Heptones, Don Drummond, Burning Spear and Dennis Brown. Dodd was not only instrumental in the development of reggae and all its varieties from ska and rocksteady to roots, dub and dancehall, but above all Studio One was a reliable hit machine with a uniquely distinctive sound. Featuring 18 tracks from Horace Andy, Sugar Minott, Johnny Osbourne, Lone Ranger, Prince Jazzbo and Cedric Im Brooks, among others, the Studio One Showcase compilation impressively showcases what that sound was and still sounds like today.
