Lovers Rock is a subgenre of reggae that focuses on romantic content. It combines sweet harmonies with soul, R&B and soft reggae rhythms. Although Lovers Rock has never been able to establish itself as a dominant style in Jamaica, it has enjoyed great popularity among the local audience for many years. This inevitably led to the island's most famous singers such as John Holt, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott, Gregory Isaacs and Freddie McGregor recording countless Lovers Songs. Some of the finest can be found on this compilation, such as "Truly" by Marcia Griffith and "I'll Be Gone" by Horace Andy. As is typical of soul jazz, the big hits are supplemented by rare gems that sell second-hand for big bucks or are known only to proven experts, including a version of "Never Give Your Heart Away" from the 1970s (Carlton And The Shoes). Of course, the name of the label says it all: all the titles were produced by Clement "Sir Coxsonne" Dodd in Brentford Road. The liner notes for this heartfelt gem were written by none other than reggae expert Lloyd Bradley, author of the standard work "Bass Culture" and the books "Sounds Like London" and "Reggae: The Story of Jamaican Music".
