Not only did he sing great songs, but he also spoke universal truths about justice, faith and freedom. The new album Johnny Cash: Forever Words is dedicated to this fact. The estate of Johnny and June Carter Cash has been described by their son John Carter Cash, producer of Johnny Cash: Forever Words, as a "huge collection of stuff," including handwritten letters, poems and documents that his father wrote down throughout his life. Over the past two years, John Carter Cash has invited a select group of contemporary artists to set Cash's newly discovered lyrics to music in their own compositions. They have done so in a way that is both honest and original, further emphasizing Johnny Cash's qualities as a versatile and universal poet and storyteller. They were recorded mostly at the Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and produced by Johnny and June Carter Cash's son, John Carter Cash, along with Steve Berkowitz. Songs by Ruston Kelly and Kacey Musgraves, Chris Cornell, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello and others. Based on the bestselling Johnny Cash - Forever Words: The Unknown Poems by Chris Cornell (1964-2017): 21 years after Cash covered Soundgarden's "Rusty Cash" on his album "Unchained," Cornell returned the favor with "You Never Knew My Mind," one of his last solo songs, in which he set Cash's own deep and introspective lyrics to music. Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves: The newlyweds recorded the song "To June This Morning." The lyrics come from a letter Johnny Cash wrote to his wife, June Carter Cash. Rosanne Cash: Cash's eldest daughter interprets her father's song "The Walking Wounded". This is only her second time working with her half-brother John Carter Cash. Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson: American icons and lifelong friends of Johnny Cash ("Highwaymen"): on "Forever / I Still Miss Someone", Kristofferson sings the last poem Cash wrote, accompanied by Nelson's unmistakable acoustic guitar playing.
