"I'm Not There" is a meta-biographical film that recreates the life of BOB DYLAN as performed by six different actors - Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett - at six different stages of the artist's life and career. The 4LP "I'm Not There" features songs from the film and songs inspired by it. New interpretations of BOB DYLAN's songs are performed by an eclectic cavalcade of acclaimed and celebrated contemporary musicians, including EDDIE VEDDER (PEARL JAM), SONIC YOUTH, JIM JAMES (MY MORNING JACKET), JACK JOHNSON, SUFJAN STEVENS, MARK LANEGAN and many more! The Million Dollar Bashers, a backing band formed especially for "I'm Not There" by SONIC YOUTH guitarist Lee Ranaldo and featuring SONIC YOUTH drummer Steve Shelley, TELEVISION guitarist Tom Verlaine, WILCO bassist Nels Cline, guitarist Smokey Hormel, keyboardist John Medeski and longtime BOB DYLAN bassist Tony Garnier, appear at many points on the album. Other tracks on the album feature the alternative-country band CALEXICO, who accompany the artist. The album "I'm Not There" features two versions of the enigmatic title track, a new interpretation by Sonic Youth, and the original BOB DYLAN recording, a rare and often bootlegged outtake from "The Basement Tapes" sessions that has long been unavailable on any official release.
