Product Information The late Merle Haggard, known to his fans and colleagues as "Hag," was one of the main exponents of the "Bakersfield sound" that emerged in the early 1960s as an alternative to the increasingly slick and homogeneous country music coming out of Nashville. In addition to possessing one of the most distinctive and memorable voices of his generation, Haggard was also one of country music's most prolific hitmakers and songwriters - he wrote more than three-quarters of the more than 100 songs that charted on the Billboard Country charts between 1962 and 1990, as well as many album tracks. Hague's songs quickly found an audience among his country music peers. They also appealed to artists working in other genres, and especially to the generation of rock musicians who fell under their spell in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and who often performed them live and/or recorded them. The latest contribution to Ace's 'Songwriter Series', 'Holding Things Together', offers a broad cross-section of Hague's first-class original compositions as reinterpreted by artists as diverse as Gram Parsons (in various guises), Bettye Swann, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Grateful Dead and legendary 'singing cowboy' Roy Rogers, to name a few. Most of the songs listed are well-known enough to be recognized by their titles, and are rightly regarded as country music classics, but as always, we've also discovered some lesser-known killers - some of which are being released on CD for the first time. Memorable, often moving and always spectacular, these songs confirm that this iconic artist is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, in any musical genre.
