He was only nine years old when he made his debut as a guest of the Philadelphia Orchestra with Haydn's Concerto in D major. At the age of 16 he had to fill in for Leonard Bernstein's concert - the programme was Liszt's First Piano Concerto. It was his big breakthrough. Leonard Bernstein became his mentor and Leon Fleisher his teacher. His career gradually developed and he still performs today, although not as often as in the 1970s and 1980s. The recording dates from 1986 and shows the pianist at the full strength of his virtuoso abilities.
