Product Information For nearly a decade, Tycho was known as Scott Hansen's musical pseudonym, but after the release of Awake - his second LP on Ghostly International - the solo project morphed into a three-piece band. The record, which is closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, is set in the present day and sounds more like Hansen than drawing on his influences. "In many ways, it's Tycho's first real record." Following 2011's LP "Dive," the San Francisco designer toured extensively, and with a full band onstage, his sound coalesced into a punchy, organic whole. On this tour, Scott was rejoined on the road by Zac Brown (guitars, bass), but it was the addition of Rory O'Connor's live percussion that ultimately sent Hansen back into the studio with a more precise vision. "After the tour, I decided I wanted to capture a more energetic, driving live performance sound on the next album," Hansen recalls. Involving musicians in the creative process of Tychos was a step toward expanding his own songwriting and pushing the project beyond its current sound. At a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began putting the finishing touches on the structure of the new record, but it wasn't until he and Rory settled into the Santa Cruz hills that everything fell into place. "It crystallized a vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on the record," Hansen says. The sound was much more spare and concise, with more organic instruments in the lineup. Songs like "Montana" and "Awake" are a departure from Tycho's previous material - the unique group e!ort embedded in the songs on the new record - while "See" and "Dye" reflect ideas from previous work, forming a bridge between old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also handled the engineering of "Dive", the team was able to capture the impulses that TYCHO could previously layer underneath the synths and exhume them with distinctive bass and guitar patterns. Hansen, also known for his design work as ISO50, has blended visually and sonically throughout his career. "This is the first time in my life that I've dropped everything and focused on one artistic pursuit," Hansen notes. Tycho's previous albums were created when the amalgam of songs was nearing completion, but on "Awake," the music becomes the centerpiece and the result is a true expression.
