Although some people know The Byrds only for their cover versions, critics consider the band to be one of the most important and influential groups of the 1960s. Their distinctive sound of clean harmony vocals and ringing guitars, combined with the sound of "British invaders" the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, made The Byrds pioneers of folk rock, psych rock, raga rock and country rock. The recording of The Notorious Byrd Brothers album in 1968, at the height of the Flower Power movement, required an unearthly effort; disagreements over artistic direction and dissension within the band's ranks meant that by the end of the recording sessions only two members of the Byrds remained. The album was, against all odds, a heartfelt affair. It is more experimental and progressive than anything they have done before and is considered one of the best albums they have ever recorded.
