From the depths of the Sub Pop archives comes a reissue of Soundgarden's thunderous launch album "Screaming Life", which is joined here by bonus tracks from the "Fopp" EP and the "Sup Pop 200" compilation. For the first time on vinyl since the late eighties! All tracks have been remastered by the great master Jack Endino, who also recorded the original tracks. He said this about it: "Ah, 'Screaming Life', Soundgarden's debut and one of the first records I made for anyone outside my own band. I knew Soundgarden pretty well because Skin Yard and Soundgarden often performed together in Seattle back then. Kim didn't live far from me. He liked to stay up late, drink beer and talk about guitars and philosophy. I had a four-track tape recorder in my basement and had already recorded a few demos with Soundgarden and other bands. When the Seattle studio had to close unexpectedly, I called Chris Hanzsek with this tip. In July 1986, we took over the empty building and christened it Reciprocal Recording. Chris released his eight-track disc Otari, I brought all my friends, and soon I started working with Soundgarden. Sub Pop was still in its infancy, so Soundgarden themselves were paying $15 an hour for the studio. Matt Cameron, who had been starving in Skin Yard for a year, amicably left the band to play with Soundgarden - he's listed as "bonus tubs" in the credits on the original release. Matt is the kind of drummer you can point a single microphone at and he'll still sound fantastic. He's got three songs on the recorder. That left one track for Hiro's Fender Jazz bass and an incredible four tracks for Kim to share with his insane guitar psychedelia and Chris Cornell's still-rehearsed voice. You can literally hear Chris experimenting with his voice as he gradually realizes his vocal range. "Nothing To Say" was a song that left us with our mouths agape. Things got moving. Soundgarden weren't done with Sub Pop, though. They wanted to contribute a song to the Sub Pop 200 compilation, but didn't have one up their sleeve, so they spontaneously wrote it in the studio. The old classic "Fopp" along with a Green River cover version became the "Fopp EP", which is also included here and shows that Soundgarden took strange cover versions with childlike glee.
