Polish progressive rock stars Riverside have undergone an extremely interesting and focused musical evolution since the beginning of their career, which now reaches another absolute peak in terms of song dynamics on their eagerly awaited fifth studio album "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves". Formed around 2001 as a very atmospherically dense, but also rather dark metal formation, the foursome found themselves in the fortunate position quite early in their career of being able to appropriately encapsulate the changing musical zeitgeist of the time. Their playing struck a chord with the emerging new prog-metal generation, who chose bands like Tool, Porcupine Tree and Opeth as the new leaders of the movement, not only for their impressive technical instrumental skills, but also for their deep emotionality and refreshing, always powerful musical expression. Riverside subsequently and unsurprisingly turned into one of the leading exponents of the new European progressive scene quite early on, and especially with the release of the "Reality Dream" album trilogy - "Out Of Myself" (2003), "Second Life Syndrome" (2005) and especially "Rapid Eye Movement" (2007). Having toured countless dates across Europe, as well as touring in support with progressive rock icons Dream Theater, Riverside have managed to fully establish themselves with both metal and progressive rock fans with the release of their latest studio album "Anno Domini High Definition". "ADHD" thus shot up to a sensational #1 in the sales charts in its home country Poland in 2009 (the album has since even achieved official gold status!), #94 in Germany and #58 in the Netherlands, clearly underlining Riverside's ever-growing momentum and increasing number of fans. Then in 2011, Riverside celebrated the band's tenth anniversary with the release of the special EP "Memories In My Head" and once again toured relentlessly across Europe, with one of the many highlights being a performance on the main stage of the gigantic Woodstock festival in Poland in July 2011, attended by over half a million (!) people. But let's fast forward to the present day: 'Shrine Of New Generation Slaves' (or more simply 'Songs') was recorded, mixed and mastered between March and June, and in September and October 2012 at Serakos Studio in Warsaw, Poland (where the 'Reality Dream' trilogy was also recorded) with Magda Srzednicka and Robert Srzednicki. "Songs" contains just over 50 minutes of Riverside's highest quality and 8 tracks that not only present another mature, modern take on the band's beloved charismatic trademarks, but also add various dashes of classic rock and jazz-heavy art rock aspects to Riverside's usual diverse palette of styles to surprising effect. It may be less metal now with Riverside, but it's certainly no less progressive... Mariusz Duda of Riverside comments on "Songs" as follows: "With this release we are trying to prove - especially to ourselves - that we are still able to surprise and improve. "Songs" is definitely our showpiece, both musically and lyrically. We're looking to start a new, more mature chapter in our career and focus more on melodies and a more organic rock groove than we've been doing lately. The title of the album may seem a bit confusing at first, but the abbreviation should make it all the more clear what we were actually going for musically on this album..." Conceptually, "Songs" is just as captivating and personal as Riverside's previous records, but in this case there is a very strong and dark social component to the album's theme, as Duda outlines, "It's about how we all hear from friends or people around us almost constantly about how unhappy they are, how they hate their jobs, how they don't have time for this and that, how time just seems to fly by, and how they feel like slaves in their lives anyway. It seemed like a good choice to write about this unhappiness and "modern slavery" where people no longer seem to be able to maintain control over shaping their own lives." (insideoutmusic. com) Product Information The title of Riverside's new studio album (the fifth in their career) has been revealed. It's "Shrine of New Generation Slaves" and the band will be working on it for the next two months in Warsaw's Serakos studio. It will feature 50 minutes of music divided into 8 brand new tracks. "In 2012 we focused on working on a new album and we tried to prove, especially to ourselves, that we can still surprise with something, and most importantly - to create an album that would become our showpiece, both musically and lyrically," says Mariusz Duda, the band's leader. "The title may sound a bit complicated, but the acronym certainly explains what we did with our music this time." (riversideband. pl) Polish progressive rock stars RIVERSIDE have undergone a very interesting and purposeful evolution during their musical career so far, and now they should reach another spectacular peak in terms of dynamic songwriting with their latest, highly anticipated fifth studio album "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves". Starting out with densely atmospheric and semi-dark metal soundscapes on their first steps in 2001, this quartet has effortlessly hit the changing outlook of the new prog-metal generation that has embraced bands like Tool, Porcupine Tree and Opeth for their instrumentally technical but deeply emotional and still powerful, fresh take on the style. With the release of the "Reality Dream" trilogy, which includes the first three acclaimed albums "Out Of Myself" (2003), "Second Life Syndrome" (2005) and most importantly "Rapid Eye Movement" (2007), RIVERSIDE quickly became one of the leading bands of the new European prog-metal movement. After a tour supporting icons of the Dream Theater scene and several headlining shows across Europe, RIVERSIDE definitely established themselves in both the metal and prog-rock spheres, and their latest album "Anno Domini High Definition" reached number one on the sales chart in Poland upon its release in 2009 (gold album status!), number 94 in Germany and number 58 in the Netherlands, cementing the band's ever-growing popularity among their fans. In 2011, RIVERSIDE released a special EP entitled "Memories In My Head" to celebrate the band's tenth anniversary and once again toured relentlessly around the world, with one of the many highlights being their performance on the main stage of Poland's giant Woodstock festival in July 2011, a spectacular event attended by over half a million (!) people. "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves" (or also "SONGS") was recorded, mixed and mastered in March and June and in September and October 2012 at Serakos studio in Warsaw (where the "Reality Dream" trilogy was also recorded) with Magda Srzednicka and Robert Srzednicki. "SONGS" offers more than 50 minutes of top-notch RIVERSIDE music divided into 8 tracks that not only clearly reflect a more developed, modern take on the charismatic elements that characterize the band, but also effectively add more classic rock vibes and jazzy art-rock pieces to the ever-challenging mix that RIVERSIDE has always represented, perhaps just less standard metal and also less complex without being less progressive. Mariusz Duda from RIVERSIDE comments on the project "SONGS" as follows: "With this album we are trying to prove, especially to ourselves, that we can still surprise with something, and most importantly - to create an album that would become our showpiece, both musically and lyrically. We wanted to start a new, more mature chapter and focused again more on melody and organic rock groove than before. The title may sound a bit complicated, but the acronym certainly explains what we did with our music this time around." Conceptually, the album is as intense and introspective as ever with RIVERSIDE, but this time around there is a strong and very obscure social component, as Duda explains the theme and title of the record, "It comes from the fact that we all hear almost daily from friends and loved ones how unhappy they are, how they hate their jobs, how they don't have time for this or that, how time flies and how they actually feel like slaves in their lives. I thought it was a good choice to write about this kind of unhappiness and this "slavery of the new generation" where people seem unable to take control of their own lives." (insideoutmusic. com) Review , "A diverse neoprog album that approaches the band's previous peak Second Life Syndrome." (insideoutmusic. com) (Good Times, February/March 2013)
