It's rare that a musician starts over with his seventh studio album. That Paul Kalkbrenner hit the reset button and erased the tried-and-true Kalkbrenner box for the album, regenerating all the sounds, surely has something to do with his goal of elevating "7" to the next plateau of perception around the world. "7" has become a refreshingly open album, and you can tell the artist was glad to finally be allowed to sit down in the studio again. Interestingly, it would seem that he put the album together with his concert sets in mind, so fluid it seems and so full of references - analogous to the etudes of Johann Sebastian Bach, according to Kalkbrenner, who enjoys listening to classical music - motifs from one piece keep popping up in others, sometimes more clearly, sometimes very subtly. He knows what he's doing, and deliberately sets up the intermezzo as a placeholder for "Cloud Rider." It's the album's strongest track, a tightly pathetic anthem that shows what the band's ambitions are: building on a sample from D-Train's "You Are The One For Me", it sets off a very big emotional merry-go-round.
