Here the Finns reflect on the meaning of life, evolutionary theories and the individual beauty of all living beings and species. Their vast musical universe sounds partly heavier, folkier, but mostly more experimental. Powerful and balladic songs alternate with real catchy anthems. The highlight is definitely "The Greatest Show On Earth" with a running time of 24 minutes. Based on the title of a book by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, the song deals with nothing more than the evolution of planet Earth. Compared to the 1.6 billion years that need to be estimated, 24 minutes is a well condensed summary. Richard Dawkins also includes several passages from "Infinite Forms Most Beautiful" in which he quotes from the writings of Charles Darwin and from his own books. The collaboration with Richard Dawkins has taken Nightwish by a surprising storm. Composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, who as a child wanted to become a biologist, is surprised by the reaction. Evolutionary biologists today are probably more shocking than Satanism or drug excesses. "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" is a concept album about science. For Tuomas, who in recent years has read many science books by Richard Dawkins, Brian Cox and Carl Sagan, there is much poetry and beauty in the scientific perspective.
