Moonspell's fourth album, The Butterfly Effect, recorded at London's Trident Studios in 1999, took a more experimental route after their relevant beginnings in gothic metal. With an industrial sound, the Portuguese LP lives off of down-tuned guitars, an electronic veil of ghostly synths and the concept of chaos theory, which holds that even small events can lead to serious consequences. While the ominously calm "Can't Bee" hypnotizes with electronic trip-hop elements, Fernando Ribeiro's vocals mutate into a storm of aggression on the chorus of "Lustmord" or "Angelizer," making the LP a complex contrast of different genres that has been etched in the minds of longtime fans with the striking video for "Butterfly FX." On their fourth album, the Portuguese have taken an experimental route, delivering some of the boldest and most contrasting songs of their career, which are now - 21 years after their initial release - finally available again. The re-release also features two new remixes, alternate cover art and booklet cover, as well as a Butterfly FX excerpt from the band's official biography, "Wolves Who Were Men".
