Originally released in 1974, "Big Fun" features music from three different phases of Miles Davis' "electric" period in the early 1970s. The first and fourth sides, featuring the songs "Great Expectations" and "Lonely Fire", were recorded three months after the recording of "Bitches Brew" and feature the sitar, tambura, tabla and other Indian instruments. In addition, Davis plays trumpet for the first time with his signature harmonic flute, which makes his trumpet sound almost like a sitar. The track "Ife" was part of the recording of the 1972 album "On The Corner", which featured a groove and a collection of musicians with individual improvisations and variations over a hypnotic bass line. The track "Go Ahead" was recorded in 1970 and comes from Jack Johnson's recordings. The recording is based on riffs and grooves with a fairly minimalist line-up of Steve Grossman - soprano sax, Dave Holland - bass, Jack DeJohnette - drums and John McLaughlin - guitar with wah wah pedal.
