The agit-rockers from the "Motor City" of Detroit took their motto ("Drop all inhibitions!") literally. The tough, unpretentious and snotty band kicked it up a notch with their repertoire and not for nothing is considered, along with the Stooges, the forefather of punk. The energy of the quintet around guitarists Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith, later Patti Smith's husband, is still electrifying today. "We were Punk before Punk. We were New Wave before New Wave. We were metal, before metal. We were even 'M' before Hammer. C."." This is how Rob Tyner, lead singer and frontman of the MC5, spoke of his band in 1991 (the year of his death). And when you hear John Sinclair's (MC5's manager) speech at the beginning of the show at Detroit's Grande Ballroom, you know that this is a piece of musical history! "Brothers and sisters, I want to see a revolution out there. Brothers and sisters, the time has come for each of you to decide whether you will be the problem or the solution. Are you ready to testify? The MC5!" And already the riffs of "Ramblin' Rose" - a fast, pedaling pre-chorus song - are sounding. "Kick Out The Jams" will spark a revolution. (In 1969, many American record stores refused to sell this album, claiming it was obscene). More garage rock classics follow, until "Motor City Is Burning" proves the band's groove and skillful improvisational talent. "I Want You Right Now" and "Starship," a Sun Ra cover, then take it to the extreme. A true masterpiece, one of the best live albums ever, simply ahead of its time! Now available again on vinyl.
