8 hours of music a night - 1 hour of music a day: a manifesto for slowing down life British composer Max Richter, who recently caused a sensation with his new composition Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, has written what is probably the longest single-voice classical music composition ever recorded. SLEEP lasts eight hours - and is designed to put listeners to sleep. "It's an eight-hour lullaby," Richter explains. On September 4, Deutsche Grammophon will release the eight-hour version as a digital album, as well as the one-hour version - from SLEEP - on CD, vinyl, download and streaming. On the one hand, SLEEP is an experiment Richter wants to explore "how the brain can become a medium for music when our consciousness is on vacation." During the composition, Richter interviewed renowned American neuroscientist David Eagleman to learn more about the brain's functions during sleep. Musically, the work's length places it in the tradition of John Cage, Terry Riley, and LaMonte Young; as a lullaby, the work looks back over centuries of history, beginning with Bach's Goldberg Variations, which were written for the Sleeping Count.
