Free-thinking six-piece freak rock beast King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return with their seventeenth album, "L.W.". "L.W." is both a companion piece to its predecessor "K.G." from 2020, as well as a standalone effort from the Melbourne innovators. After a decade of increasing productivity, not being able to tour in 2020 and 2021 has given the band the opportunity to, as frontman Stu Mackenzie says, "reset our brains and try to figure out how to do something different". Where in the past King Gizzard might have recorded fourteen or fifteen songs to fit on a ten-track album, the extra time has allowed them to record nineteen full-lengths in a row. The result is a double album that extends the band's microtonal explorations first heard on 2017's Flying Microtonal Banana, which many fans and Stu himself consider one of Gizzard's favorite albums. Then, as now, the band set out to find the "tones between the tones" through modified instruments and Middle Eastern tunings. As the band enters its second decade, its creative future in the 21st century promises to be even more daring, crazy and inventive.
