There's only one King Diamond, and for over thirty years the great Dane has been releasing classic albums and putting on concerts that fans will remember for the rest of their lives. Perhaps the only downside to such an impressive catalogue is that there are too many great songs to fit into a single set. However, you'd be hard pressed to find even one fan who wouldn't want to hear 1987's essential "Abigail" in its entirety, and "Songs For The Dead Live" captures it twice in very different places. Each of the two shows - at Belgium's Graspop Metal Meeting in June 2016 and at Philadelphia's Fillmore in November 2015 - will feature eighteen songs in each set, and before "Abigail" kicks in, a number of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate classics such as "Welcome Home", "Halloween" and "Eye Of The Witch" will also be played. The performances from the stellar lineup of musicians, which includes guitarists Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg and drummer Matt Thompson, are absolutely ferocious and tight. It was captured on film by director Denise Korycki for Wild Wind Studios, who worked closely with King on all aspects of the shoot and was in the middle of the audience's attention throughout the show. This includes inventive camera placement, such as the shot of the back of the wheelchair that is driven into the song "Out From The Asylum" at the beginning of the show, or the view from the coffin at the beginning of "Abigail's" opening song "Funeral," which adds another dimension to the whole proceedings. Of course, the theatricality that has become synonymous with King Diamond is in full force, adding to an even more intense experience. The gothic set design and the involvement of actors who portray specific scenes that tie in with the songs certainly add to the drama and the feeling of being completely detached from reality, ensuring that the show remains thrilling from start to finish. While the setlists are virtually identical, the drastic difference in the two venues creates a distinctly different atmosphere. With its vast, epic scale and virtual sea of freaked-out metalheads, Graspop is a supremely exciting spectacle that is king. The Fillmore show is immediately more intimate and more of a mixed gathering of metalheads looking to let loose for the weekend. The audience is made up entirely of King Diamond admirers, screaming every word and showing their love for their hero. "Songs For The Dead Live" gives those who missed these concerts a chance to experience them up close and personal and offers much more than the usual concert DVD.
