John Parish and Polly Jean Harvey's first collaborative album followed Harvey's critical and commercial breakthrough "To Bring You My Love". Produced by Parish and Harvey, "Dance Hall At Louse Point" was originally released on September 23, 1996 and garnered great acclaim, with publications such as Entertainment Weekly and Q praising its "brooding country blues" and "sheer immersion" and Rolling Stone calling it "incredible... distinctive". In a 1998 interview with NME, Harvey explained, "I really wanted to learn different things, and you can learn a lot by working with other people. I tend to put more emphasis on the songwriting than the music and I wanted to take the music to a similar level somehow, but I didn't have the confidence in myself as a musician to do that. I know that John can write sophisticated and intellectual music, much more than I can, which is very easy to do. So it was really just a matter of trying out my songwriting." In 2001, she told the Chicago Sun-Times, "People don't count Dance Hall At Louse Point, but it's a record I'm really proud of. It was a huge turning point. Lyrically, it took me into territory I'd never been before. With John's music being so different from mine, it made me write lyrics in a completely different way and structure songs differently." The new 180g edition of the record is the same as the original vinyl recording, which was recorded by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering under the supervision of John Parish.
