The end point of this centuries-old musical development is, as we know, Johann Sebastian Bach's vast polyphonic cosmos. Conductor John Nelson combines three great works by Bach with the unique atmosphere of Notre Dame Church. Now with a live recording of the B Minor Mass as the first movement on DVD: the two Passions will follow in the coming years.The B Minor Mass is one of the most important works of classical music ever written, and after its rediscovery in the early 19th century was soon apostrophised as "the greatest musical masterpiece of all time". John Nelson, whose Virgin Classics discography ranges from Handel to Brahms, presents in his Bach project on the one hand the highest quality musically and on the other hand the visual treatment by the renowned French director Olivier Simonnet ensures a very special fascination and suggestiveness. The recording of the B minor Mass took place at Notre Dame at the end of March 2006. Soloists: a select group of top Bach performers: soprano Ruth Ziesak, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, countertenor Daniel Taylor and baritone Dietrich Henschel. In addition to the Ensemble Ochestral de Paris, John Nelson conducts the Maîtrise Notre-Dame de Paris, a choir that is at home in the famous cathedral.
