More. Earth, Wind & Fire even attributed existential significance to the band's highly layered blend of Latin, gospel, soul, funk and a sharp horn section: this album was supposed to point the way to whether the band could make it big or fall into the nameless monotony of countless rhythm & blues bands. The basic recipe of smooth Latin beats, pithy bass grooves and lush funk improvisations, spiced with exotic sonic ingredients, was right on. The airy falsetto and relaxed harmony vocals created a condensed big band sound that Rolling Stone trade magazine described as innovative yet popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet engaging.
