James LaBrie, John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess and Mike Mangini recorded a total of nine new songs for it, which have a combined length of around 57 minutes. Dream Theater recorded "Distance Over Time" over four months at the remote Yonderbarn studios in Monticello, NY. For the first time in the band's history, they worked together on an album from start to finish in the same location. As usual, Petrucci took care of the production.
