The new album was inspired by the movie "Straight Outta Compton", which tells the story of the hip-hop formation N.W.A, and thus the rise of Dr. Dre. "When I saw the first footage from the movie, I went straight from the set to the studio and I was just inspired. I started recording the album, the soundtrack. I kept it a secret, but now it's done," he said on his radio show.
