2019 marks the 40th anniversary of David Bowie's Lodger! Now Parlophone is celebrating the anniversary with a limited edition seven-inch picture disc, Boys Keep Swinging! Following Low and Heroes (1979), Lodger is the third album of the legendary Berlin trilogy, made in collaboration with Brian Eno. In contrast to the rather cold sound of its two predecessors, Bowie hoped to give it a certain garage feel. Eno has been experimenting for several years with the "Oblique Strategies" cards, a sort of custom tarot card designed to alert musicians to extra-musical approaches to inspiration. In the case of Boys Keep Swinging, the cards said that the "roles were reversed" - so Bowie's longtime guitarist Carlos Alomar sat in on drums while drummer Dennis Davis took over on bass. The version on Side A features the song in a mix Tony Visconti's Lodger created in 2017 for the box set A New Career In A New Town, as both Visconti and Bowie felt that due to lack of time and studio constraints they could never give the album the sound it deserved. Side AA features the song I Pray, Ole, which was recorded during the recording of Lodger but never released until David and David Richards combined it as an additional track on the 1991 reissue of Lodger. The song has not been available since.
