This album is a masterpiece by Antonio Vivaldi. It is a collection of sacred music that is incredibly moving and powerful. The music is written for solo voices, strings and organ and is some of the most beautiful and emotional music I have ever heard. If you are looking for a powerful and moving religious experience, then I highly recommend this album.

Vivaldi, today one of the most played composers, was forgotten almost 200 years after his death and his works were considered lost. Everything changed with the discovery of manuscripts in the library of a monastery in Piedmont. Vivaldi's style is so distinctive that his music is easily identified after a few bars. We are more likely to confuse phrases from his various works than to confuse his music with that of one of his contemporaries. Vivaldi took the text of 'Nisi Dominus' (RV 608) from Psalm 126 of the Pilgrim Psalms group - these are intended to prepare the faithful for an encounter with God. King Solomon's text tells of the divine glory that no human endeavour can do without. By contrast, the Stabat Mater (RV 621), one of Vivaldi's best-known works, sounds contemplative, moving and at times sombre. The first four or three lines depict the sorrowful Mother of God. The next four reflect on suffering itself. The ninth quatrain then brings the climax, the music recalling the image of Christ suffering under the scourge. Consolation is brought only by the last stanza in the pastoral rhythm of 12/8 and the long Amen.
