About the product: Dvořák composed his Symphonic Poems shortly after the American triumph of his "New World Symphony" and after the completion of his magnificent final string quartets (Op. 105 and 106). The first three poems were first performed in London in 1896, while the Wild Dove was premiered by Leoš Janáček in Brno in March 1898. The recordings on this CD are performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Sir Charles Mackerras, an accomplished musician and a master of Czech music. The poems complete his legacy in Dvořák's symphonic output, from which he recorded for Supraphon Symphonies Nos. 6, 8 and 9, Slavonic Dances and Symphonic Variations. Sir Charles's performances of Dvořák's works blend the great Talich tradition with a deep knowledge of the composer's work. The live recording of The Witch of Noon and The Water Goblin reflects the warmly moving atmosphere of the conductor's farewell to the Prague audience. Martinů's triumphant recording of Three Fragments from Juliette (Gramophone Award 2009) was made at the same Valentine's Day concert. The studio recording of The Wild Dove is the final culmination of Sir Charles's long-term collaboration with the Czech Philharmonic.
