The soundtrack to the cult film was produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and brutally hit the usual musical tastes of the youth of the time. Reznor told MTV in 1994, "I suggested to Oliver Stone that he make the soundtrack a musical collage. He should create something unique and interesting and enhance the songs with snippets of dialogue and editing, instead of just creating a string of already released music." Some songs were written specifically for this soundtrack. For example, the song Burn by Nine Inch Nails. Other songs were contributed by artists such as Pattie Smith, Cowboy Junkies, Leonard Cohen, Dr. Dre, Juliette Lewis and Jane's Addiction. The soundtrack sold 500,000 copies in the US and was awarded a gold record.
