On the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, "Martin Luther, the great reformer of the church, champion of the one doctrine, witness to the faith, scholar of the Scriptures, translator of the Bible, pioneer of freedom of conscience, ingenious creator and preparer of the new high German written language, reformed church structures. The proclamation of the Gospel could not remain without visible consequences for the form of worship. In addition to sermons and Luther's writings, it is primarily song through which the Protestant faith is spread. The new song of the Reformation is based on the faith of the confessing church. By adapting, translating, and expanding a number of older church hymns, but especially his original paintings, Luther became the true founder of German Protestant hymnody. His own hymns are a reflection of his immense personal faith, which has a riveting effect on his fellow men and posterity. He became the "Wittenberg Nightingale". In the course of the transformation of the old forms of worship, the need arose to replace the Latin hymns with German ones. Luther's first hymn of praise, "Nun freut euch, liebe Christen gmein", was written in 1529. In 1524 the "Geistliches Gesangsbüchlein" was published. In the preface to it, Luther states that he and several friends, especially Sperat, composed several songs for the melodies by Johannes Walther, which were intended to bring the gospel closer to the youth in particular. In this little hymn book we find the powerful songs of the Reformation, which soon gained a place among the people and were sung wherever the gospel was preached: for Luther music is of great importance. In his 1538 "Preface to All Good Hymns" he wrote: "Music produces pleasures pleasing to God, destroys the work of the devil, and prepares the heart for the Word of God. Johann Sebastian Bach uses the linguistically powerful biblical text translated by Luther like probably no other composer and lets it ring out in a unique way in his oratorios, cantatas and motets. Yes, as one Bach biographer has said, without Martin Luther there would be no very large body of Johann Sebastian Bach." (Friedrich Hänssler)
